Freedom Fighter: My Story

My name is Rebecca McGill and I am a Freedom Fighter.

This is my story.

I felt called to anti-trafficking work at a young age. Fighting trafficking has become an extremely important aspect of my life.

In High School, I founded the STOP Trafficking of People club, to encourage students to get involved in the fight to end modern day slavery. It is still active at several high schools and universities today.

I studied Biology (Pre-Med) in college, with the goal of becoming a medical missionary. After a short-term trip serving at a CURE International Hospital in Kenya, I realized I was more passionate about people than I was about medicine.

After college (and less than two weeks after getting engaged), I moved to Phnom Penh to serve with Agape International Missions (AIM), a Christian nonprofit whose mission is to rescue, restore, and reintegrate survivors of sex trafficking through Christ’s love and to prevent sex trafficking by protecting, equipping and empowering vulnerable and exploited communities. From 2017-2020, I worked as the Policy and Administration Coordinator at the AIM Restoration Home providing rehabilitation and care for rescued survivors. In the summer of 2018, I ended my long-distance engagement and married the love of my life. My husband Connor joined me in Cambodia to serve with AIM. I am deeply blessed by the special role Connor's unconditional love and support have played in my life and my work.

In 2020 we returned to the states, feeling called to take what we learned at AIM and pursue avenues to fight trafficking and support survivors in California. We have done this through volunteering with anti-trafficking organizations, extensive training, and acting as resource family parents.

Since being back in our home state, we have seen the gaps in the survivor aftercare needed.

That is why we started Aurora Freedom. I am confident in my life calling in anti-trafficking, and I am honored to be a part of this work.
